The reemergence of the feminist movement in the late 1960s has created some new words; among them "Ms." is one of the most interesting words to examine. This paper discusses two aspects of the meaning of "Ms.": denotative and connotative meanings. In the first section of the paper, I examine "Mr.", "Miss", and "Mrs." from a historical perspective, arguing that "Mrs." was used for adult women, regardless of their marital status. In the second section, I discuss how "Ms." has emerged in the arena of the English language. Sections three through five discuss "Ms." in Australian, British, and American English based on the studies of Pauwels (2001), Schwarz (2003), and Morris & Morris (1975, 1985). In the sixth section, I examine the meaning and frequency of "Ms.", concluding that it carries a connotative meaning of a divorced or unmarried woman. In the final section, I examine how "Ms." is defined in the various English dictionaries.
