Whatever the shortcomings of the early Negro novelist, at least he displayed a certain vitality in confronting the realities of caste. Toward the end of this period, however, a group of novelists appeared who treat the color line as nonexistent or unimportant... there is no barrier to success which diligence and perseverance cannot hurdle. Rather than face the hard facts of caste, these novelists prefer to indulge in crude success-fantasies.
