Paul Auster's City of Glass is a complex web of transformations. Characters and even places change frequently. The changes that occur throughout the story are transformation myths that point to the unstable nature of post-modern existence in the city. The main character Daniel Quinn undergoes several transformations, as do his late wife and son, Peter Stillman Jr. and his father, Quinn's apartment, and the author himself. In this essay I assert that the purpose of the transformations is a mechanism of survival in the face of harsh reality, as will be explained. I will also refer to the myth of Proteus and other Greek transformation myths in light of their relevance to the discussion.
