In 2002, the J. F. Oberlin English Language Program launched a multi-level streamed curriculum and by necessity, a placement test battery for assigning students to an appropriate level. Due to the importance of appropriate and consistent placement to the success and ongoing evaluation of the new curriculum, the placement test and procedures have also undergone continual appraisal and modification. A statistical procedure known as Rasch analysis has been employed throughout this process to inform decisions regarding modification of test content and the location of level cutpoints. In this report, I review the ongoing development of the ELP Placement Test battery and provide examples of how Rasch analysis has been used to improve the test and inform placement decisions.
