Vanity Fair is the first major novel by William Makepeace Thackeray, one of the most well-known British novelists of the nineteenth century. Though the events of the novel take place in the early nineteenth century against the background of the Napoleonic Wars, it was written and published in serial form from 1847-8 for the early Victorian audience. The novel is famous for the author's stark irony of society and of almost all the characters created by him. One of the major characters, Amelia, is portrayed as a typical Victorian "Angel in the House," a paragon of domestic ideals. However, the feelings her portrait arouses among readers are mostly quite negative ones both in the nineteenth century and in the modern era. This paper analyses the several layers of negative suggestions surrounding the character of Amelia which reveal not only the author's general attitude toward the question of women's roles and positions in the society of the day, but also his own unresolved personal experiences of domestic life.
