The Shanghai Science Institute was established under the jurisdiction of the Japanese Foreign Minister in the French Concession of Shanghai in 1931. With the object of carrying out purely scientific research in China, the Institute was composed of eightDepartments : Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Pathology, Hygiene (independent of the Department of Pathology in 1938) , Bacteriology, and Pharmaceutical Research. The researches in the Department of Physics were largely affected by Shinzo Shinjo, who was a member in the Shanghai Committee of Oriental Cultural Work and the leader for the Department of Physics, and were directed to geophysics (including geomagnetism and ionosphere) and cosmophysics. Shinjo was appointed to the second Director of the Institute in 1935, and made much efforts for the development of purely scientific research against the influence of the Japanese Military. However, the Institute was put in the war regime after Shinjo's sudden death in 1938, and was abolished on the occasion of the defeat in 1945.
