The absolute value of a university's endowment probably is not the best measure of a university's financial wealth, because these institutions vary widely in scale. One way to control for the scale of the institutions is to divide each institution's endowment value by the number of students. This study focuses on the endowments of American liberal arts colleges in New England. By the per student basis data analysis, we find that rich institutions from the standpoint of per student endowment value, clearly spend larger expenses per student than others. A healthy endowment ensures the strength and stability of a university.
