Rappaport Hovav and Levin (1998) claims that a range of meanings and syntactic expressions which a verb exhibits can be accounted for by their theory based on the event structure. To prove the validity of their theory, they mainly quote the so-called contact verbs as contrete examples. Their theory seems remarkable in that it can explain the crucial semantic and syntactic difference between activity verbs and change of state verbs. However, close scrutiny on the semantic features and syntactic bahaviors of contact verbs reveals that their theory, especially its event structure representation, is still ineffective. This paper aims at explaining the semantics and syntax of contact verbs for which their theory doesn't work well.
