Dropping webcam prices and increasing home computers' power nowadays make a solid ground for wide-spread Augmented Reality applications. However, several design issues need careful addressing to ensure their success. In this paper, we present design strategies and adapted algorithms for making popular AR applications. Our technology is able to augment in real-time a non-rigid surface, with proper handling of deformations, illumination effects, and occlusions. The robustness and automation level of our method allowed an efficient collaboration with a professional designer. The combination of sound AR technology and careful visual design is key to successfull AR. As a result, the artist Camille Scherrer used our approach to create a magic book and won the Best European Design Diploma award.
