Three-Dimensional Bone Segmentation Using Whole Body Bone SPECT Scan Images(International Forum on Medical Imaging in Asia 2009 (IFMIA 2009))

Whole body bone SPECT scan image is one of important methods to investigate the spreading of malignant tumor, which can reveal more precise anatomical location of carcinoma detected by Tc-99m MDP bone scan. However, due to the lack of structural landmarks, it is usually time-consuming for a doctor to identify abnormalities when a large number of patients undergo whole body bone SPECT scan. Automatic and accurate segmentation of bone regions is therefore required to offer more precise description of bone sections for obtaining quantitative measurement. In this study, we developed a 3D based segmentation method that was able to isolate bone regions in a whole body bone SPECT image. In this method, we designed a new data structure called bone graph for helping characterize the human bone anatomy and extract useful morphological information. Finally, the 3D model of each bone region was rendered to evaluate the segmentation result. We expect the proposed CAD program might be adopted to assist nuclear medicine physicians to identify the potential locations of bone lesions.
