In-vivo skin layer measurement is important in the examination of the intra and inter-layer variations of skin tissues before and after certain stimulation or treatment. Therefore, detection of skin layers is an important task in computer-aided diagnosis. This study presents a new method for detecting skin layers in OCT images automatically. The proposed method firstly handles the speckle problem by nonlinear complex diffusion and coherence-enhanced filtering. Skin layers are then segmented by using an active contour model driven by a PCA-based (principal component analysis) similarity force. The proposed algorithm has been verified on real OCT images and achieved good experimental results.
