Medical image segmentation is indispensable for the study of diseases, but requires additional input from the user to overcome the noise and diversity of anthropotomy, and strongly influenced by the user's subjectivity. We propose an automated 3-D cardiac segmentation algorithm using search rays, which determine the area of a heart from CT volume data by measuring the radiodensity and its continuity along the paths of cast rays. The end points of each path constitute the mesh model of a pericardium. This result can be directly used for medical applications or utilized for guiding further segmentation.
