Currently, the modulation transfer function and noise power spectrum are commonly used as image quality metrics to characterize the resolution and noise performance of digital radiographic systems. In general, higher spatial resolution leads to an increased noise level. One of the current dilemmas in digital radiography is the extent to which these parameters affect physical or clinical image quality. A system may only be superior in one metric while being inferior to another in the other metric. In this work, a computer simulation approach is presented that is to employ mutual-information metric to analysis the trade-off between resolution and noise.
