Aluminum alloy A2024-T3 plates and copper alloy C2200-P plates were subjected to the tensile testing. At required plastic strains, the specimen was taken out from the tester and then subjected to the off-line ultrasonic measurement to obtain the ultrasonic wave reflected from the specimen bottom. The ultrasonic velocity and the surface roughness were also obtained. Then the in-process ultrasonic measurement was carried out during the tensile testing by using a water bag. The reflected wave was Fourier-transformed to obtain the Fourier spectrum. From the spectrum, the peak intensity of the spectrum (PI) and the average gradient of the transfer function (AGTF) was obtained For aluminum alloy and the copper alloy specimens, PI and AGTF obtained by the off-line measurement monotonically decreased with increasing plastic strain. These parameters obtained by the in-process measurement also showed monotonic decrease with increasing deformation. The velocity of the longitudinal wave and the surface roughness showed the monotonic change with increasing plastic strain.
