The monitoring and measurement of urban sprawl are crucial to provide the government with the updated information for urban planning and city sustained development. In this study, satellite remote sensing technology is used to monitor urban dynamic development and change of Qingdao City. Based on the RNIM (Radiometric Normalization of Image Mosaic) method, four periods of Landsat TM and ETM images are normalized radiometrically and the urban sprawl of Qingdao City from 1996 to 2002 are analyzed and interpreted. The conclusions from this study would give suggestions to the city planning and development.
