In this paper, a novel quasi-dipole antenna element together with a new type of microstrip feed network are proposed to design a 4x8-element sub-array for Ku-band satellite communication applications. The antenna exhibits a small size and a good overall performance in terms of wide band, high gain, low cross-polarization level and low backward radiation. The numerical results agree well with the measured ones, showing that the proposed antenna array achieves an impedance bandwidth of better than 15% for Sn less than 1.5, a maximum gain of 22.7 dBi, a front-to-back ratio over 25 dB and a cross-polarization level below -25 dB. Besides, several types of printed antennas designed by authors' group in the past two years are also introduced briefly.
