On the subject of“mental development and self-awareness during junior high school”taught using the“Jugyosho”method which consists of questions, together with detailedanswers and explanations, I set the goals to be achieved by revising the draft version of theteaching materials through trial classes provided for university and college students.I then analyzed opinions on such teaching materials expressed by the students ofUniversity A in the trial classes consisting of roughly three sessions(n=33 in 2005), whichlasted for 90 minutes per session. I also conducted a trial questionnaire survey on the sameteaching materials for trial classes attended by students from College B. I then tried to developa revised draft of the teaching materials, setting the goals to be achieved for every question. The revised draft(summary)of the teaching materials on“mental development and selfawarenessduring junior high school”using the“Jugyosho”method consists of the followingfour questions, each of which is accompanied by an explanation:1)Selecting the items most suited to oneself for self-evaluation. Selecting self-evaluationitems of children in Japan from charts containing the self-evaluations of children fromother countries;2)Conducting group discussion and making presentations about the background where theself-evaluation of Japanese children remains uncommon;3)Having all members of a group of friends write about only the good things about themselvesand having each member of the group make presentations on what was written;4)Reading letters from junior high school students who are having problems with truancyor their studies and holding group discussions and making presentations. The results of the trial questionnaire survey(n=27 in 2007)on the trial classes using thesame teaching materials for the students of College B were as follows: 89% of the college studentsresponded that these draft materials would be“useful”or“somewhat useful”for junior high school students. Meanwhile, as many as 96% of the college students responded that theywould feel“happy”or“somewhat happy,”when only the good things are written by others. The number of items suited to oneself in the self-evaluation(n=20 in 2007)was significantlyhigher after teaching than before teaching(p<0.05).Hereafter, I will make a comparison of the group for which trial teaching was done with acontrasting group, conducting the same survey at intervals of“immediately before,”“immediatelyafter”and“after three months,”thus continuing to study the effectiveness of the reviseddraft of the teaching materials on“mental development and self-awareness during junior highschool.”I will also further update the revised draft of the teaching materials by using them inactual classes of junior high school students, while at the same time conducting scientificresearch on the content.
