Recently in Japan, the study of marine terraces has been advanced greatly, especially from the view point of the Qusternary research. The author, however, thinks that the study has been progressed without the effort of cognition on the essence of marine terraces; in other words, we have not yet fully answered the problem proposed by S. IJIRI (1953-"What the true character of marine terrace is ? (Kaigan-dankyu towa nanika)". This has been bringing about some confusion on the interpretation of marine terraces at the Quaternary research in Japan as well as at the school and university teaching. To elucidate such a problem, the author tried to collect data based on the bibliography and on his field works of marine terraces. The clarified facts are as follows: (1) The interpretation of marine terraces based on the Johnson's model is still popular in Japan as well as in Europe (Fig. 1). BIRD (1964,1968), for example, denied the existence of such marine terraces. (2) DIETZ and FAIRBRIDGE (1968) claimed that the shallow marine profile illustrated by JOHNSON (Fig. 2) is a fallacy. Even if it is true, JOHNSON (1919,1925) himself did not relate definitely the profile with marine terrace. The treatment of the JOHNSON'S shallow marine profile as the original form of marine terrace is the follower's mistake, although it is true that Johnson alluringly illustrated to do so. (3) The author thinks to be necessary to suggest to school and university students the existace of various marine terraces, i.e. metaphorically speaking, a marine terrace corresponds to a bed of sedimentary rock and other terrace to a member.
