Among the issues attracting attentions in today's world are corporate social responsibility and corporate governance. Fruitful arguments on these issues require the quest for the meaning and future of modern corporations. Depending on the business system approach or the idea of business evolution, this article intends to indicate some clues to such quests. First, the general tendencies of the industrial society are briefly outlined. Next, the contemporary trends and problems in corporate social responsibility and corporate governance are considered. Then, the essential tendencies of large corporations are examined, using the business system approach. The idea of the evolution of corporations, the concept of the institutionalization of business enterprises and the model of the Advanced Social Corporation as the future corporation are shown. In conclusion, the significance of the business system approach for the search of the meaning of modern business and for the study on corporate social responsibility and corporate governance is again emphasized.
