One of the significant elements of international human resource management in multinational companies is the "global assignment." Appropriate selection and effective training before overseas assignments are fundamental factors in this policy. In the beginning, multinational companies' global assignment policy was only for a few elites. However, the global assignment has grown and became popular among multi-national companies and thus new policies for those who are appointed for overseas assignments need to be established. This paper examines the issue of selecting people for international assignments, addressing who to select, how to select, and how firms can successfully structure staffing practices for global assignments. It also focuses on the challenges of training and positioning people so that they perform effectively abroad, through the analysis of the case of one of Japan's biggest multinational medicine firm, company X, and referring to other authors on the subject as well.
