In order for corporations to survive and grow within today's economy with its increasingly strict regulations on the natural environment, it is necessary that management takes the environment into consideration and adopts an ecological perspective. Using such a perspective, this paper will present a comparison of approaches taken by the United States and Japan in three areas of pollution prevention technology, availability of environmental information, and environmental strategies and the problem of cost. Although Japanese corporations are behind their American counterparts in all three of these areas at present, the gap has been reduced considerably since 1996 when the ISO introduced environment management under the ISO 14001. Currently, some Japanese corporations are even planning zero emission production systems, which will entirely eliminate environmental pollutants.
