Paper sheet handling systems must be able to process thousands of bills, tickets, and copies with stable operation, i.e. no jams. Public machines such as an automatic ticket gate or an automatic teller machine (ATM) require higher reliability than commercial or personal equipment. These machines handle a variety of media in different conditions at high speed. A careful analysis of the behavior of sheets in a feeding machine can improve their performance. In this paper, we study the influence of feeding machine structure and flexible media properties on feeding reliability. In particular, we focus on the behavior of sheets after they emerge from between two rollers. The sheet is discretized using a lumped mass and spring approximation. The analytical results are tested on an experimental sheet feeding machine with laser position sensors. As a result, a nonlinear simulation with guide contact predicts the behavior of the sheet reasonably.
