Polysulfone (PS) is one of the most popular materials as a membrane for blood purification therapy. Solute removalperformances of hemodialyzers, however, are dependent not only on physico-chemical structures of the membrane butalso the design of modules or outer-casings. The authors evaluated four different PS membrane dialyzers in which twoof them included the same membrane to demonstrate the importance of module housing. No significant differences werefound in creatinine (MW 113) removal; however, higher solute removal was found in a dialyzer with a membrane of evenlower solute permeability as molecular weight of a target solute became larger. Observed enhancement in soluteremoval may be caused by the internal filtration that was strongly dependent on the design of outer-casing. It wasconcluded that the module design of a dialyzer is as important as solute permeability of the membrane.
