This paper attempts to account for the appearance of will in futurate if-clauses. It denies the generally accepted assumption that only volitional will is allowed to appear in if-clauses and that the occurrence of non-volitional will in if-clauses is an exceptional or marked phenomenon. It is argued that three kinds of will can naturally appear in if-clauses: volitional will, pure-future will, and modal future will; and it will also be made clear that two kinds of would, that is, volitional would and modal future would, can appear in if-clauses. An explanation is made in terms of tense and aspect of verbs, showing necessity of treating state verbs and event verbs separately.
