We have started the international distance education project called TIDE (Trans-pacific Interactive Distance Education) as a co-research among Kyoto University, UCLA and NTT since 1998. The purpose of the TIDE project is both IT (information technology) system research and pedagogical research for the distance learning classes. The project took the style of connecting two classrooms via the high-speed network. A distance learning system for such a style is not enough to transmit the videos of each class bi-directionally. It should be the system that combines network processing, media processing and human interface, and be easy to be used for non-experts of the information technology. We have developed automatic shooting system for videos, presentation synchronization system, and hand written processing system. During 5 years, we had 10 classes of variety of themes to check suitability and effectiveness of this kind of distance classes. We have surveyed to the students in the class. The result showed that the students enjoyed themselves to participating the distance learning courses. In this paper, we discuss our experiences from these two viewpoints in detail.
