This article is a rigorous, sequential critique of Bateson's theory of learning. Derived from Russel's 'theory of logical types', the theory is a noble effort to create an explicit conceptual framework for describing communicational phenomena in biological life, such as learning, so that explicit criticism will be possible. Attempts at mapping the theory onto actual contexts have shown that criticism is necessary. For example, I recommend that in place of the Newtonian physical model for zero learning, the idea of homeostasis or completed learning be used. The definition 'learning is change' is amended to 'learning is change toward 'negentropy'. For the rest, efforts are made to refine the definitions of context and the categories of learning.
