The modern educational system in Japan has undergone many changes to meet the demands of the times since the system was first established in 1872. At present the institutions for higher education include more than 500 colleges and universities, 140 of which have a faculty of technology, some 500 junior colleges which are mostly for women, and 62 colleges of technology. The advanced engineering faculty was established and added to the college of technology in 1992 in order to cope with the rapid progress of technology. The educational system provides the students of technology with two options: university education (undergraduate courses and graduate courses) and the college of technology (basic engineering courses and advanced engineering courses). Generally, universities in Japan today are not able to educate or train creative researchers or engineers properly. Now that the general principles on the standards for establishing universities have been agreed upon, it is time to reconsider the present institutions of technology. This article is intended to offer some suggestions on their improvement.
