The need for creative teaching methodologies in distance education is examined through an exmination of the "team-teaching" or "cooperative course production" approach. The background of the cooperative course production method and the role of the course chairman are reviewed drawing upon the example of the British Open University. A determination is then made of the degree to which team-teaching is currently being utilized at the University of the Air (UA) in Japan by analyzing the nature of presentation of the basic and introductory courses in the cultural, social and natural sciences. Based upon the number of UA faculty and visiting faculty that are involved in the design and implementation of courses, the findings reveal that the UA has not yet fully developed the "cooperative course production" approach. Stressing the importance of the team-approach in the technology of distance education, this study recommends how to effectively initiate such a cooperative methodology at the University of the Air.
