In the present study, we investigated important factors in the education of horticultural therapy programs at universities and high schools from the perspective of horticulture as therapy. The results showed that the relationship between the individual and the therapist was particularly crucial for realizing the therapeutic effects of horticultural therapy, and that creation of individualized programs was a key factor. In addition, creation of detailed programs was necessary for the success of horticultural therapy programs. Moreover, based on its history, horticultural therapy was shown to be in its early stages in Japan in terms of education and research.
