The purpose of this study is to examine the function of cinema. The relation between the function of words and screen comes into question. The role of words, especially conversation and naration, is to express a meaning under the influence of screen image. And that of screen has also twofold function. It contains the subjectivity and objectivity. In other words, the concrete image of screen necessarily draws out the editor's sensibility. So, the structure of cinema exists between the function of words and screen above mentioned. That is the common knowledge, but there are some cases where these principles do not apply. In this work 'L'ANNEE DERNIERE A MARIENBAD', words has no meaning in cinema on the whole, but it aims at a particular image. The expression of the object in the screen has lost reality as object itself, so that the mental picture is given much weight by relying on a moving shot. It may be given as a conclusion that words and screen aim at the reverse direction of their functions each other.
