Crystal structures and magnetic properties of ternary sulfides BaLn_2S_4 (Ln=Sm, Gd-Lu)

Crystal structures and magnetic properties of the ternary sulfides BaLn_2S_4 (Ln=Sm, Gd-Lu) are reported. Their powder X-ray diffraction measurements and Rietveld analyses show that they adopt the CaFe_2O_4-type structure with space group Pnma. The lattice parameters linearly increase with the Ln^<3+> ionic radius. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were carried out from 1.8 to 300K. The BaLn_2S_4 compounds for Ln=Gd-Yb show the Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior, and BaSm_2S_4 shows the van Vleck paramagnetism.
