1. Purpose of Study It is necessary for each elementary school children to acquire the sharp and keen sense of language in order that they attain some abilities regarding Japanese language through their lives. The purpose of this study was to consider what Japanese language education should be in order to develop the sense of language for each individuals. 2. Plot of Study It will be a three years study and will consist of present status investigation for elementary school children, individual follow up of the unique students, and teaching practice. For this plot the study will be practical in cooperating with elementary and junior high school teachers. 3. Outline of This Year's Study On the first year, the investigation regarding the linguistic consciousness and the sense of language was conducted. The results were as follows: 1) Considering the relationship between language and wills or behaviors of fourth graders, it was observed that not only had they the language which made individuals enhance their wills and urge their behaviors, but also the language which made them lose their wills or energies. As a whole their linguistic consciousness was sound and serious. 2) Examining the perceptions which works for sounds and rhythms and which works for language denotating the name of color for fifth graders, it was observed that the former perceptioo was satisfactorily found but lacked the ability to carefully organize the image in detail in the latter perception. 3) Considering the perception which works for grammar and usage, prominent individual differences were found and differences were greatly influenced by a language disorder in our society. 4. Future Perspectives Further investigation in a wide range and individual follow up would be necessary. Also, the effective teaching method through teaching practice must be considered.
