Most universities have piano lessons for the credit of instrumental music in their curriculum for the department of child education. There are various meanings or important purposes in studying piano and any good effect cannot be expected if only teaching it vaguely. The basic guidance of piano should be at the same time that of music and studying piano is away to be familiar with music. Piano is used for basic understanding of music rather than for the sake of playing the piano itself, and for that purpose it is necessary to play the piano. This notion has to be kept in mind to guide the students especially of physical universities. It is mainly European music of 18 through 19 century that is taught there, which forms the foundation of what we call classical music in Japan, and this kind of music is completely different from our traditional Japanese music We have to realize first of all this essential difference to learn another music. It has already been over a hundred years now since European music was introduced to us, and our daily life has been fairly westernized in food, clothes, and housing. But our custom or behaviour does not change easily. From this point of view I observed the difference of the basic way of life between European and Japanese, and then examined the musical difference originating from that in the aspect of the three elements ; rhythm, melody, and harmony. After its proper recognition I would like to consider the elementary guidance of piano. I adopted BEYER as the textbook, which is the most popular introduction in Japan, and divided it into 17 steps. In every step I made mention of the exercise plan, necessary musical grammar, hints on teaching, and the points on practicing.
