• Computers have made dramatic progress in the second half of the 20th century and in the 21st century the progress is growing explosively. Computers are now not simple tools for calculations, but highly sophisticated machines for producing new methodology, new thinking, and even new styles of life. Above all, computer simulations have remarkably advanced and made it possible to reproduce and predict many natural and social phenomena in the virtual world. A new scientific branch called Simulation Science is now being established as an academic discipline. In the present paper, the progress in computer science is reviewed as a new branch, taking some simulation results in plasma and fusion research as examples.
