The Morris water maze test is widely used for the ethopharmacological evaluation of encephalopathy. We examined the spatial learning ability by using the Morris water maze and the Biel water maze test with stroke-prone SHR rats (SHRSP), spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and normotensive Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY). Both water maze tests were performed using 15-week-old SHRSP, SHR, and WKY rats individually. In the probe trial, the swimming routes of the SHRSP were observed in the entire water maze, but those of the SHR and WKY rats was limited to the area around the escape platform. The combined effected of long distance and many selective points affected the swimming durability of SHRSP and lower learning ability was shown in SHRSP in the Biel water maze test. In the Morris water maze, SHRSP did not show any decreasd swimming ability. Though the acquisition learning of SHRSP was higher, the spatial learning of SHRSP was lower in the Morris water maze. As for the detectivity of the Morris water maze, it is suggested that it is more sensitive in comparison with other water maze devices. The research mechanisms in encephalopathy by using disease model rats for seizures, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and hippocampal lesions were evaluated in terms of spatial learning ability by using the Morris water maze task. In these experiments, it was confirmed that decreased acquisition of spatial learning ability was evaluated by the Morris water maze test and some advantages (simple apparatus, easy procedure, conventional management of data) in the Morris water maze test system suggest the usefulness of this method for the evaluation of learning and memorization in examinations of developmental neurotoxicological research.
