This paper analyzed a number of aspects of ethnic business with Brazilian stores in Hamamatsu city, Shizuoka prefecture as an example. These included: local development, the market, the consciousness of ethnic group members and of Japanese residents, and experiences and behaviors at business establishments. The characteristics of ethnic business establishments were then defined. Thus, this paper investigated the factors to consider in defining ethnic business. As a result, we learned that we should study the characteristics of ethnic business establishments as places, in addition to the conventional definition based on business managers, employees, and goods and services handled, given the increased diversification of ethnic business which has come about with the acceleration of international labor migration in recent years.
