In early 2000, nobody believed that a shortage of LNG supply could occur in mid 2010; instead, an over supply was expected. However. the delay of gas development projects in Australia, Iran, Qatar (moratorium) due to the soaring costs of development, lack/shortage of skilled engineers/labourers and environmental/political restrictions, is likely to lead to a shortage of LNG supply. Compared with crude oil reserves, it is believed that the natural gas reserve distribution in the world is even, but still 55% of natural gas reserves are in only 3 countries: Russia, Iran and Qatar. As a result of the LNG supply from existing facilities in countries such as Indonesia, Qatar, Oman being expected to decline from mid 2010 to 2020, conjointly with the delay of new developments, the forecast of supply/demand of world LNG may support a new trend of LNG business model from an up-stream point of view. It may be a good time to establish a distinction between a major player and a Japanese player in the LNG business.
