Several studies have suggested that a firm's solutions to the transaction difficulties posed by opportunism lie in the deployment of appropriate control mechanisms. However, research has mainly investigated the role of individual control mechanisms. There has been little work that examines the simultaneous use of multiple mechanisms. The author examines how a manufacturer might mitigate an independent supplier's opportunism through the use of three control mechanisms: partner selection process, the development of bilateral lock-in, and monitoring. Moreover, the author tests these control mechanisms empirically in the context of the apparel industry and investigate how various combinations of these mechanisms affect opportunism. The results indicate that none of three control mechanisms alone necessarily moderates the negative impact of an independent supplier's opportunism, whereas the simultaneous use of control mechanisms during the partner selection process and monitoring has a positive effect on mitigating opportunism. Specifically, control mechanisms that are applied to the selection process concerning a partner's technical capabilities and competitive power ex ante and complemented with monitoring ex post are positively related to mitigating an independent supplier's opportunism. The results also show that ex ante and ex post control mechanisms are complimentary and should be managed systematically.
