Gender in India is characterized by the caste system and its control of women's sexuality. Globalization and highly economic development have caused a restructuring of gender role and caste. Social exclusion of women belonging to dalits, religious minorities and indigenous peoplesare being strengthened. On the other hand, Hindu nationalism seeking social integration based on Hindu majority have been absorbing both high caste and Hindu dalits into the idea of "Hindu Nation".This paper examines gender and Hindu nationalism in current India from the perspective of a dalit women's liberation and development movement with which the author has been engaged in rural areas in Tamil Nadu since 1984. It will clarify a public space the women successfully try to open by breaking caste and religious barriers from the bottom.
