The idea of "kegare" is important in considering the idea of evil in Japanese intellectual history. The purpose of this paper is to clarify what 'kegare' means in Kojiki and Nihonsyoki that mark the beginning of Japanese intellectual history. In the first section, this paper will focus on the expressions relating to 'kegare', and analyze their usages. Negative aspects in the idea of 'kegare' are separated out. In the second section, this paper will focus on the cases relative to 'kegare', and separate out positive aspects in the idea of 'kegare'. This paper will take these negative and positive aspects as ambiguity of 'kegare'. In conclusion, the ambiguity of 'kegare' for order as well as for life are proposed.
