The purpose of this study is to investigate whether motor imagery simulates temporal characteristics of motor task. Eight healthy volunteers participated in this study. The subjects performed the oscillatory motion of abduction and adduction of the index finger each 600 ms in accordance with the sound cues of the metronome. The EMG activity and the MEP amplitude in the FDI muscle were recorded during performing the motor task. In addition, the subjects performed motor imagery of the oscillatory motion in accordance with the sound of the metronome generated each 600 ms. During performing motor task, the EMG acitivity and the MEP amplitude were increased when abducting the index finger, but these were not different between the movement phases during performing motor imagery. These findings indicate that motor imagery does not simulate temporal characteristics of motor task.
