Nitrile Ylide Mechanism in Formal [3+2] Additions of Activated Oxazole

A mechanism of the formal [3+2] additions of 5-alkoxy-2-dialkylaminooxazole with some dipolarophiles to give five-membered heterocycles is determined. A kinetic study using methanol suggests that the reactions proceed stepwise through a nitrile ylide intermediate. Semiempirical molecular orbital calculations show that electronic properties of 5-alkoxy-2-dialkylaminooxazole are quite differenet from that of other oxazole derivatives.
