This paper examines the foreign accent of German learners with acoustic correlates of the rhythmical distinctions between syllable timed and stress timed speech proposed by Ramus et al. (1999). Five declarative sentences were recorded by 5 native speakers of German, compared with 30 Japanese students, who were divided in 2 level groups of 15 students each. The results show that vocalic percentage and vocalic standard deviation of the differences in the sentence are significant between the 3 groups, depending on the schwa at the end of the word and the syllabicity of the nasal following it. The durational differences in accented words and long vowels were not a crucial factor for the foreign accented speech of German learner.
