To examine a default metrical rule from which the pattern of pitch-accent could be derived, we had participants carry out two monitoring tasks, with a focus on the metrical aspects of a single word generated internally in response to a pictured stimulus. In the moraic structure monitoring task, participants were asked to decide whether constituent phoneme (s) in second moraic position was/were structurally independent (e.g., /ra.ku.da/; /ka.ra.su/) or special (e.g., /kae.ru/; /paN.da/). In the accent type monitoring task, participants were required to decide whether accent type was Type-0 (e.g., /kae.ru/; /ra.ku.da/) or Type-1 (e.g., /paN.da/; /ka.ra.su/). Mean latencies were significantly faster for moraic structure decisions than for accent type decisions. Accent type had no significant main effects of decision latencies, but did interact with moraic structure in the accent type decision task. These results suggest that pitch-accent assignment is based on a default rule in reference to moraic structure.
