As formal regional projects based on ASEAN + 3 continue, the phenomenon of constructing a region in East Asia is becoming increasingly important in the real and academic circles. This paper applies an international political economy perspective to explore the main factors and processes of regionalization and regionalism in East Asia. The paper stresses the importance of the inter-related dynamics of competing political and economic actors pursuing different geographical pictures in East Asia. The United States, Japan, China and ASEAN pursue claim different regional strategies. The empirical case study of Pearl River Delta and industrial agglomeration of Japanese automobile industry reveals the important role of the different levels of governments in developing cooperative network relations with multinational firms in the process of constructing a region in East Asia.
