This article reports the results of an exploratory experiment to investigate how a content-based e-learning program can enhance learners' motivation and autonomy in an EFL context in Japanese universities. A group of university students majoring in engineering and another group of non-engineering majors participated in an e-learning program designed for those who major in engineer and technology for four weeks in 2007. The participants' motivation was measured based on their results from a test score and examined through a questionnaire. The results indicates that non-engineering participants showed more positive attitude toward the English program than those who majored in engineering. The effectiveness of content-based teaching and learning was considered based on this experiment.
