In this paper I will examine in detail the way of Aristophanes' borrowing the traditional epic language and adapting it for his comedy Birds. In the parabasis the chorus-leader starts to tell the new genesis of the world and insists that birds are the first born creature before the other gods, even Ge (the earth). The first part of the parabasis, 11. 685-689, is a kind of prologue of his declaration. Aristophanes uses epic words there and arranges to give an impression of an archaic style with a twist which connoisseurs could appreciate. For example, the last phrase τοιζαφθιτα μηδομενοισιν seems, at first sight, to be brought in as an epic formula, but to be a new creation by Aristophanes in this context.
