The purpose of this paper is to discuss the language teaching in Finland and grasp the actual situation. The leading goal of the language teaching in Finland has been diversification of the language study. Diversification here has two different aspects. One is diversification of the mother tongue teaching, which has tried to promote minority languages in schools. The other aspect of diversification is to make a wide choice of foreign languages available in schools. The most difficult problem for language teaching planning is to find appropriate balance between the mother tongue, the other national language (Swedish for Finnish-speaking, and Finnish for Swedish-speaking students), and the most important international languages.
