The unique and diverse fields that encompass the study of Kumano include the natural environment, folklore, history, culture, and places of worship. The shared resources that are indispensable to human beings provide a research foundation for the relationship between the natural environment and culture; the relationship being one that is fostered by worship carried out in deep mountains and valleys, where local people believe gods reside. Ever since Kumano was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in July, 2004 under the "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range", as many as 150 thousand tourists and fans of Kumano Kodo have been visiting this place annually. As a result, aspects of the ancient history of the Kumano area have come to attract nationwide attention and reevaluation. This report discusses the historical significance of the Sanzan Shinko focusing upon more than ten sources of the Kumano Kanshin Jikkai Mandala which have been discovered in Mie prefecture.
