Sustainable development is an overarching goal of the European Union set out in the Treaty. The EU presented a strategy in 2001 for moving toward this goal. Following the review of the this strategy launched by the Commission and on the basis of contributions from the other institutions, the European Council adopted in June 2006 a renewed Sustainable Development Strategy for an enlarged EU. It is composed mainly of key objectives and policy guiding principles, analysis of key challenes (climate change and clean energy; Sustainable transport; Sustainable consumption and production; conservation and management of natural resources; public health; social inclusion, demography and migration; and global poverty and Sustainable development challenes) and proposals for targets, objectives and measures on them. It also reaffirms the need to gradually change the non-integrated approach to policy-making.
